Has BJP Initiated a Campaign on Rural Employment in Punjab?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chandigarh, Jan 7 (NationPress) In an effort to counter the alleged misinformation propagated by Opposition factions, notably the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress, regarding the Viksit Bharat G RAM G Scheme, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a comprehensive public awareness initiative on Wednesday, originating from Kheowali Dhaba village in Fazilka district of Punjab.
State BJP President Sunil Jakhar emphasized that this new initiative guarantees direct financial assistance to impoverished laborers, increasing the employment days from 100 to 125.
He stated that the updated legislation has tightened regulations against corrupt practices that previously deprived the needy of their entitlements, which explains the opposition from AAP, Congress, and other parties.
Describing the rural employment scheme as a significant step taken by the Government of India to benefit the less fortunate, Jakhar remarked, “The funds intended for the poor will directly enter the laborers’ bank accounts, rather than being siphoned off by contractors and leaders.”
He highlighted that corruption has been eradicated from the scheme, which is why individuals who profited from the previous Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) are protesting, as their illicit earnings are now in jeopardy.
Jakhar noted that over 6,500 corruption cases under MGNREGA have emerged in Punjab, yet Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has failed to take action against any corrupt individuals who exploited the rights of the impoverished.
Continuing his critique of Chief Minister Mann, Jakhar pointed out that this year, the state government has offered a mere 26 days of employment under the old scheme, which it now defends.
He challenged Mann, questioning why 100 days of employment were not provided to laborers if the previous scheme was truly effective.
According to Jakhar, the former scheme lacked accountability, while the new law establishes clear responsibilities, which is why the state government is lamenting and opposing it.
He reminded Chief Minister Mann of the upcoming Assembly elections in early 2027, asserting that the Delhi leaders to whom he has tied the state government will eventually depart, leaving him to face the public's ire in Punjab.
Jakhar urged Mann to address the declining law and order situation in the state and prioritize the public's interests.
He claimed that the government’s much-touted “war against drugs” has devolved into a mere public relations stunt, with ineffective measures against drugs and gangsterism.
Later, Jakhar visited a location near the residence of the Deputy Commissioner of Fazilka, where crores of rupees were allegedly misappropriated in the name of the MGNREGA scheme to build a nonexistent lake.
He highlighted that no lake is present at the site, despite payments having been made from the government treasury for the project.
