Kolkata, Sep 4 (NationPress) The chief whip of the BJP’s legislative party in the West Bengal Assembly, Shankar Ghosh, was admitted to the hospital on Thursday after he reportedly fell ill following an incident where he was allegedly manhandled by the Assembly marshals earlier that day.
Ghosh was one of five BJP lawmakers suspended from the Assembly in less than two hours on the final day of the special session.
As Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee began her address regarding the harassment of Bengal-speaking individuals in BJP-governed states, BJP legislators, led by Ghosh, protested against the “undemocratic” suspension of the opposition leader in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, which had occurred on Tuesday.
Eventually, the Speaker of the House, Biman Bandopadhyay, suspended Ghosh and summoned the marshals to escort him from the House.
During the escort, Ghosh attempted to resist, leading to him being forcibly removed by the marshals.
Initially, after being expelled from the assembly lobby, Ghosh spoke with the media. However, he soon began to feel unwell and was taken to a private hospital in Maniktala, North Kolkata. Sources from the state BJP indicated that Ghosh underwent an echocardiogram and a CT scan, with an X-ray planned to check for potential internal injuries. Reports indicate he sustained injuries to his head and neck. He remains under observation.
Another suspended BJP member, Bankim Ghosh, who also faced rough treatment from the assembly marshals, has been hospitalized as well.
In the meantime, BJP national president J.P. Nadda reached out to opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari to inquire about the health of the two hospitalized legislators. Nadda has also requested photographs and videos documenting the confrontation with the assembly marshals as supporting evidence.
