BJP Claims Higher Muslim Fatalities in West Bengal Than Any Other State
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 4 (NationPress) On Wednesday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) asserted that the fatalities among Muslims in West Bengal over the past three years exceed those in any other Indian state.
“I urge members of the Muslim community to tally the number of individuals from their community who have lost their lives in West Bengal during the last three years and juxtapose that number with figures from other Indian states. Just compare that number in West Bengal with those in BJP-governed states like Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, among others. You will find that the count for West Bengal is substantially higher than in those BJP-led states,” stated Samik Bhattacharya, president of BJP's West Bengal unit and Rajya Sabha member, during a media briefing on Wednesday.
He also mentioned several instances in West Bengal where Muslim activists within the Trinamool Congress reportedly faced violence from their own party members, incidents often characterized in the media as “factional infighting” among the ruling party.
During the event, Bhattacharya criticized the CPI(M) regarding a police report filed against the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, at a Kolkata police station.
This complaint was lodged by a young CPI(M) leader, who accused Adhikari of making remarks that could incite communal tensions during the Dol Yatra festival.
“While I do not intend to defend the Leader of the Opposition today, I can assert that he remained well within constitutional bounds. Concerning the CPI(M), the party has become entirely irrelevant in the political landscape of West Bengal. They are resorting to such tactics to maintain visibility,” Bhattacharya remarked.
He also commented on the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) decision to position Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel in advance of the upcoming polling dates for the West Bengal Assembly elections later this year.
“The last occasion when free and fair elections took place in West Bengal was in 2011, marking the conclusion of the 34-year Left Front rule and the rise of the Trinamool Congress government. Since then, not a single election in the state has been conducted peacefully. However, it appears that this time, there will be completely peaceful polling,” Bhattacharya concluded.
