Assam's BJP MLAs Face Ticket Denials Ahead of Elections: CM Sarma
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 17 (NationPress) In a significant announcement, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed on Tuesday that numerous current MLAs from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will likely not receive tickets for the forthcoming Assembly elections. The party aims to introduce a blend of fresh talent, including women and younger candidates.
During a press briefing in New Delhi, CM Sarma mentioned that the BJP plans to contest in 89 out of the total 126 Assembly seats in Assam. The party will allocate 26 seats to its ally, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and another 11 seats to the Bodoland People's Front (BPF), as part of their National Democratic Alliance (NDA) seat-sharing strategy.
He further indicated that the BJP's candidate list is anticipated to be released on Wednesday, following essential meetings of the party's central election committee in the capital.
"The party has conducted a comprehensive assessment of its sitting MLAs' performance. In several constituencies, we've decided to introduce new candidates. There will be a deliberate focus on ensuring substantial representation of women and youth in our candidate list," CM Sarma stated.
Additionally, the Chief Minister emphasized that the selection process was influenced by feedback from grassroots party members, organizational factors, and the capability to win, suggesting that merit and past performance have been prioritized over incumbency.
According to party insiders, the decision to exclude certain sitting legislators aims to combat anti-incumbency sentiments and infuse new vigor into the party's campaign as the state elections approach.
The BJP previously emerged as the dominant party in the 2021 Assam Assembly elections, subsequently forming the government alongside its allies AGP and the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL).
With a goal to retain power, the BJP is striving for a historic mandate.
