Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) workers and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters on Wednesday, 22 July laid siege to the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) headquarters in Ranchi, demanding the cancellation of the 14th Combined Civil Services Preliminary Examination over alleged irregularities. The protest drew thousands of party workers and competitive exam aspirants from across Jharkhand, culminating in a tense face-off with police outside the Commission's office.

How the Protest Unfolded

Demonstrators assembled at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium in the morning before marching towards the JPSC headquarters. BJP state president and Rajya Sabha MP Aditya Sahu and BJYM state president Shashank Raj led the procession. Anticipating unrest, the administration deployed a heavy police contingent, Rapid Action Team personnel, and senior officials around the Commission's premises, with multiple layers of barricading in place and water cannons and anti-riot units kept on standby.

As the march reached the JPSC office, protesters attempted to breach the barricades, triggering a heated confrontation marked by pushing and jostling with security personnel. The situation was eventually brought under control without any major escalation being reported.

What the BJP Alleged

Protesters alleged that the entire process of the 14th Combined Civil Services Preliminary Examination was 'shrouded in suspicion.' Specific grievances cited included the declaration of results without publishing cut-off marks, a merit list that allegedly lacked the signatures of competent authorities, and the denial of access to candidates' OMR sheets.

BJP leaders pointed to recent CID raids on the JPSC headquarters and on the agency that conducted the examination, as well as the resignation of the Commission's chairman, as indicators of serious irregularities. The party reiterated its demand for a CBI probe into the matter alongside the cancellation of the preliminary examination and the conduct of a fresh test.

BJP Leaders Warn of Escalation

Addressing the gathering, BJP leaders accused the Jharkhand state government of jeopardising the futures of thousands of young aspirants. They argued that controversies surrounding competitive examinations had become a recurring pattern in the state, steadily eroding candidates' trust in the Commission. The leaders warned of intensifying the agitation if the government failed to act swiftly. Notably, this is not the first time JPSC processes have faced public scrutiny — the Commission has been at the centre of controversy in previous examination cycles as well.

Government's Response

The Jharkhand state government maintained that complaints related to the examination results are being taken seriously. Officials indicated that the matter has already been referred to the CID for investigation, and the government assured strict action against anyone found guilty of irregularities.

With both the opposition and aspirants pressing for a CBI inquiry and a fresh examination, and the government pointing to an ongoing CID probe, the stand-off over the JPSC controversy is unlikely to ease in the near term.
