Itanagar, June 18 (NationPress) Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has officially appointed Bosiram Siram as the new state President of the Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee, succeeding Nabam Tuki.
According to a press release from K.C. Venugopal, AICC General Secretary, the appointment takes effect immediately.
The party has acknowledged the contributions made by the outgoing PCC President, Nabam Tuki.
At 58, Siram, who previously held the position of working President of the party in Arunachal Pradesh, steps into this role during a time of political transition. The Congress has historically been a significant player in the state but currently holds only one seat in the 60-member Arunachal Pradesh assembly, represented by Nabam Tuki.
Tuki, who served as Chief Minister from 2011 to 2016, won his assembly seat from the Itanagar constituency in last year’s elections.
In a significant political shift, over 1,000 members from the Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar faction) joined the Congress in Pasighat West Assembly Constituency, with Siram and Alen Perme, District Congress Committee President, present.
Earlier this week, another pivotal event saw four MLAs from the National People’s Party (NPP) join the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA), both of which are part of the ruling coalition led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) under Chief Minister Pema Khandu.
The assembly Speaker, Tesam Pongte, confirmed that the four NPP legislators who switched to the PPA are Namgey Tsering (from Tawang), Pesi Jilen (Liromoba), Tapi Darang (Pasighat East), and Oni Panyang (Mariyang-Geku).
These MLAs had previously notified the assembly Speaker of their switch on May 12.
With this merger, the PPA, founded in 1977, now claims six MLAs in the assembly, while the BJP remains the dominant party with 46 seats.
The Nationalist Congress Party holds three seats, the Congress has one, and there are three Independent MLAs.
Following the recent assembly elections in April 2024, the NPP, led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, has dwindled to just one MLA, Thangwang Wangham, from Longding-Pumao.
