BRS appoints Vaddiraju Ravichandra as Parliamentary Party leader in Rajya Sabha
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Vaddiraju Ravichandra, a Rajya Sabha member of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), has been appointed as the leader of the BRS Parliamentary Party, the party announced on 9 July. The decision was taken by BRS President Kalvakuntla Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR), who also designated Ravichandra as the BRS floor leader in the upper house of Parliament.
Background and Appointment
Ravichandra steps into the role vacated by K.R. Suresh Reddy, who recently completed his term as a Rajya Sabha member. Prior to this elevation, Ravichandra had been serving as the deputy leader of the BRS Parliamentary Party.
According to the party, KCR sent Ravichandra to the Rajya Sabha for a second term in recognition of his contributions to the party and to Backward Classes and Bahujan communities. Ravichandra was first nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 2022 to fill the vacancy left by Dr Banda Prakash Mudiraj, who was moved to the Legislative Council. After his initial term ended in April 2024, KCR re-nominated him for a second term, following which he was named deputy leader.
Current Parliamentary Responsibilities
Ravichandra's current Rajya Sabha term runs until April 2030. He serves on the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Petroleum and Natural Gas and the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Coal and Mines — roles that give him a working knowledge of two key sectors relevant to Telangana's industrial interests.
Ravichandra's Response
Accepting the appointment, Ravichandra conveyed his thanks to KCR and BRS Working President K.T. Rama Rao. He said he 'humbly accepts this significant responsibility' and pledged to 'powerfully voice the concerns of the people of Telangana in Parliament.' He also vowed to work toward strengthening the party and ensuring KCR secures a historic third term as Chief Minister.
BRS's Diminished Parliamentary Strength
With Suresh Reddy's retirement, the BRS now has three members in the Rajya Sabha — Ravichandra, D. Damodar Rao, and Dr Bandi Parthasaradhi Reddy. Notably, the party has no representation in the Lok Sabha, having drawn a blank in the 2024 general elections. This makes the Rajya Sabha the party's sole parliamentary platform, elevating the significance of Ravichandra's new role.
The appointment signals an effort by KCR to consolidate the party's parliamentary presence at a time when BRS is rebuilding following its defeat in both the 2023 Telangana Assembly elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
