Yoga has become a widely respected practice for enhancing both physical and mental health. The term "Yoga" derives from the Sanskrit root 'yuj', which translates to "to join", "to yoke", or "to unite", signifying the connection of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; and the balance between humanity and nature, representing a comprehensive approach to health and wellness.
Acknowledging its global significance, the United Nations declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga on December 11, 2014. The proposal for this resolution was put forth by India and garnered support from an unprecedented 175 member states. Prime Minister Narendra Modi first introduced this idea during his address at the 69th session of the General Assembly on September 27, 2014. June 21 was selected as it coincides with the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, symbolizing a connection between nature and human health, and holds cultural significance in various traditions.
This marked the beginning of a holistic health revolution, emphasizing prevention over treatment. Since the inaugural celebration in 2015, India has spearheaded this global observance under the Ministry of AYUSH, with backing from state governments, Indian embassies abroad, and UN organizations.
The story of the International Day of Yoga has been remarkable. From an initial participation of 9.59 crore individuals in 2018, the celebration has seen tremendous growth. By 2024, approximately 24.53 crore people participated in global events, highlighting the widespread appeal of this occasion. The International Day of Yoga has evolved into a worldwide wellness movement, uniting millions across various nations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been instrumental in promoting yoga on a global scale by advocating for its recognition at the United Nations, leading to the annual observance of the International Day of Yoga on June 21 since 2015. He has framed yoga as a scientific, evidence-based approach to holistic health and sustainable living, actively encouraging its integration into contemporary healthcare practices and daily routines.
