Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Tuesday, 15 September 2026 congratulated the party's office-bearers and workers after BSP candidates secured 19 seats in the municipal elections held in Rajasthan. Alongside the felicitations, however, Mayawati alleged that the party's tally could have been higher but for what she described as irregularities in government machinery during recounting.

Taking to social media platform X, the BSP chief wrote in Hindi — loosely translated — that many BSP candidates were 'forcibly defeated in the recount by a margin of just a few votes due to irregularities in the government machinery; otherwise, the party could have achieved an even better result.' She extended 'hearty congratulations and best wishes' to all party office-bearers and workers for the 19 seats secured.

Notably, Mayawati did not name any specific state agency or official in her post, and the allegations have not been independently verified.

BSP's Broader Performance in Recent Local Body Elections

The BSP chief also pointed to the party's improved showing in local body elections recently held in Punjab and 'some other states,' calling those results equally worthy of congratulation. She said the party had achieved better outcomes than in previous comparable elections across these states, signalling a gradual organisational recovery in what has been a difficult electoral stretch for the BSP.

Mayawati Eyes Assembly and Lok Sabha Elections

Looking ahead, Mayawati expressed confidence that the performances in civic polls would translate into stronger mandates in the forthcoming Assembly elections and the next Lok Sabha elections. 'It is hoped that in the upcoming Assembly general elections there and in the Lok Sabha general elections in the country, all those people will surely bring even better results for their party,' she said.

BJP Leads, Congress Makes Inroads in Rajasthan Urban Polls

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the leading force in Rajasthan's urban local body elections overall, winning 4,179 wards against 3,613 won by the Congress. The BJP secured clear majorities in four of the state's 10 municipal corporations.

The Congress, meanwhile, secured a majority in the Bikaner Municipal Corporation and registered a significant victory in the Jhalawar Municipal Council — considered a stronghold of former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje. The Congress result in Jhalawar is being read as a political statement in a constituency closely associated with the senior BJP leader.

For the BSP, the 19 seats mark a modest but notable footprint in a state where the party has historically struggled to convert vote share into council victories.
