Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Wednesday announced that the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the widening to four lanes of the Khagaria–Purnia section of National Highway-31 and National Highway-231 in Bihar. In a post on X, the minister said the 143.529-km stretch will be developed at a total outlay of ₹3,936.05 crore and will improve connectivity across four eastern Bihar districts.

Sharing the decision under the hashtag #CabinetDecisions, Chouhan wrote that the project 'will provide better connectivity to Khagaria, Bhagalpur, Katihar and Purnia districts and ensure safe, smooth and faster movement'. He added that the upgrade would 'strengthen regional connectivity and accelerate the overall socio-economic development of Bihar'.

The approval covers the four-laning of a key segment that knits together four districts in Bihar's eastern belt — Khagaria, Bhagalpur, Katihar and Purnia.
