Kolkata, Jan 21 (NationPress) The West Bengal Police encountered criticism from a single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday regarding an allegedly poorly constructed FIR against Asfakullah Naiya, a prominent figure in the R.G. Kar movement. The court stated that Naiya is currently functioning as an ENT specialist at a private healthcare facility in the state without the requisite qualifications.

Naiya is in the process of completing his post-graduate studies specializing in ENT at R.G. Kar. On the previous day, he approached the Calcutta High Court’s single-judge bench presided over by Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, contesting a summons issued by the Bidhannagar City Police.

During the hearing, Justice Ghosh noted that as an MBBS doctor, Naiya is entitled to practice as a physician and questioned the police about any prescriptions he may have written that imply he claimed to be an ENT specialist.

Justice Ghosh further inquired why the state police hastily initiated the case when the complainant was not a patient.

The judge highlighted that there have been numerous instances where police investigations have concluded at the general diary stage.

Justice Ghosh instructed the state police to present the case diary to his court by the next hearing date.

On January 16, Naiya received a show-cause notice from the West Bengal Medical Council following a complaint against him for acting as an ENT specialist at a private medical facility without the necessary qualifications.

On the same day, the Bidhannagar City Police summoned him in relation to the case, and police personnel visited his home in Kakdwip in South 24 Parganas district. However, Naiya was at the R.G. Kar hostel at that time.

Naiya has alleged that he is being targeted by the state and police authorities due to his active involvement in protests following the rape and murder of a female junior doctor.

Meanwhile, Naiya has garnered support from both civil society and the general public regarding his situation.
