Kolkata, Jan 20 (NationPress) Asfakullah Naiya, a prominent figure in the junior doctors’ protest against the heinous crime involving the rape and murder of a junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, has approached the Calcutta High Court to contest summons issued by the Bidhannagar City Police.
The single-judge Bench led by Justice Trithankar Ghosh has accepted the petition, and the case is scheduled for a hearing this week.
Coincidentally, Naiya's legal move aligns with the day a special court in Kolkata is set to deliver a verdict against the sole perpetrator in the rape and murder case, Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer.
On January 16, Naiya received a show-cause notice from the West Bengal Medical Council following a complaint regarding his practice as an ENT specialist at a private medical establishment, despite lacking the requisite qualifications.
On the same day, the Bidhannagar City Police issued him a summons, sending officers to his home in Kakdwip, located in the South 24 Parganas district.
At the time of the police visit, Naiya was at the hostel of R.G. Kar, pursuing his post-graduation with a specialization in ENT.
Naiya asserts that the harassment he faces from the state and law enforcement is a direct consequence of his active role in the protests regarding the rape and murder of the female junior doctor.
He has garnered support from civil society and the general public in his predicament.
Consequently, on Monday, he formally challenged the police summons in the Calcutta High Court.
The lifeless body of the female doctor was discovered in the seminar hall of R.G. Kar on the morning of August 9 last year.
This tragedy sparked widespread protests from the medical community and the public, with Naiya emerging as a key figure.
