Kolkata, Feb 6 (NationPress) The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) office of West Bengal has clarified its stance on the recommendation for a single-phase poll for the upcoming Assembly elections scheduled for later this year.

Sources indicate that the CEO’s office will soon submit its recommendation for a single-phase election to the Election Commission of India (ECI), while emphasizing that the ultimate decision lies with the Commission’s leadership in New Delhi.

The recommendation will elaborate on the necessity of a single-phase election to facilitate free and fair elections in West Bengal.

Insiders within the CEO’s office have mentioned that a significant reason for advocating a single-phase poll relates to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s criticism of the ECI’s decision to conduct the 2021 Assembly elections in eight phases during the second wave of COVID-19.

At that time, the Chief Minister remarked that if a single-phase election was feasible in Tamil Nadu, which has 234 Assembly constituencies, there should be no justification for an eight-phase election in West Bengal, which boasts 294 constituencies.

“Historically, West Bengal has also experienced single-phase polls. This will form part of the recommendation from the CEO’s office, although the final decision rests with the Commission,” a source stated.

Furthermore, the insider noted that a single-phase election in 2026 would come with both pros and cons.

“The advantage is that political parties would find it challenging to transport their supporters from one area to another, thus addressing the long-standing issue of outsider mobilization on polling day, which often intimidates voters,” they explained.

Nevertheless, a single-phase election would necessitate a greater deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), particularly on polling day.

“If the Commission can ensure adequate arrangements, the concept of a single-phase poll is quite viable,” the insider added.

Point of View

I believe that the recommendation for a single-phase election in West Bengal holds significant implications for the state's electoral integrity. It reflects a commitment to address past concerns while navigating the complexities of political mobilization. We must ensure that the decision-making process remains transparent and prioritizes the voters' experience, aligning with our commitment to democratic principles.
