Political Parties in West Bengal Push for Two-Phase Assembly Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 9 (NationPress) In a significant move, all registered political parties in West Bengal, with the exception of the ruling Trinamool Congress, have called for either single-phase or a maximum of two-phase voting for the upcoming Assembly elections slated for later this year.
This request was presented during their meeting with the full Bench of the Election Commission of India (ECI), led by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, earlier today.
The BJP's West Bengal unit had previously released an official statement outlining the key points discussed with the ECI's full Bench, which is currently on a two-day visit to the state.
In their statement, the BJP emphasized that conducting elections in either a single phase or two phases within a shorter timeframe would be preferable compared to a prolonged schedule of seven to eight phases spread out over six weeks.
During the meeting, the BJP put forth a 16-point request to the ECI, with the primary demand being for single or two-phase elections.
Moreover, delegations from both CPI(M) and Congress also met with the ECI's Bench earlier and echoed similar calls for single or two-phase polling in West Bengal.
This sentiment was reiterated by Md Salim, the CPI(M) state secretary and Politburo member, alongside former Congress Rajya Sabha member Pradip Bhattacharya, who were part of the respective delegations.
However, Bhattacharya pointed out that beyond the number of phases, the Congress delegation prioritized the need for ensuring free and fair elections in the state.
The ruling Trinamool Congress was the only party that did not advocate for single or two-phase elections this time around. West Bengal's Municipal Affairs & Urban Development Minister and Kolkata Mayor, Firhad Hakim, who was part of the party delegation, remarked that the meeting with the ECI was not the appropriate venue to discuss polling phases.
The Commission noted that nearly all political parties had requested one or two-phase elections during their discussions. They also urged the Commission to implement stringent measures to combat the activities of anti-social elements and ensure that voters are not intimidated during the upcoming elections.
