Ludhiana, Sep 6 (NationPress) BJP's National General Secretary Tarun Chugh on Saturday criticized the Bhagwant Mann administration in Punjab for its negligence in executing timely flood protection strategies and accused them of engaging in opportunistic politics concerning Bhakra waters, resulting in a man-made catastrophe.
While addressing residents in Sasrali village within Ludhiana district, Chugh condemned the government's inaction regarding an FIR filed against members of an illegal mining syndicate.
He remarked, “There is a blatant collusion between the Arvind Kejriwal-led faction and the mining mafia that warrants investigation by the CBI.”
Chugh indicated that had Punjab followed the BBMB recommendations promptly, the current situation could have been significantly mitigated. He interacted with villagers, NDRF teams, and Indian Army personnel tirelessly working to safeguard the Dhussi bundh, offering prayers for the well-being of both the populace and the dedicated individuals protecting the embankment.
“The uncontrolled illegal mining backed by the state across Punjab, occurring right under the administration's gaze, has exacerbated a natural flood crisis into a man-made disaster. The sand mafia was shielded, while Punjab faced devastation. Currently, over 400,000 acres are inundated, and approximately 1,800 villages across all 23 districts are suffering,” he stated.
Chugh also pointed out that villagers in Sasrali had raised concerns months prior, yet the AAP government opted for silence rather than action.
He noted that the Dhussi bundh was a visionary initiative by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.
“Leaders from AAP acknowledged in the Vidhan Sabha that Rs 200 crore was allocated for repairs and maintenance. Where has that money gone? Punjab deserves transparency,” Chugh questioned.
Emphasizing the Centre's commitment, he said: “Prime Minister Narendra Modi stands firmly with the people of Punjab. A total of Rs 11,000 crore has already been allocated to the NDRF, and our Armed Forces have rescued over 15,000 lives, including a mother and her newborn. While the Army, NDRF, and central agencies are diligently working, the state government is absent. The so-called ‘super CM’ Kejriwal and his deputy are wasting taxpayer money instead of safeguarding lives.”
Regarding Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's health, Chugh expressed: “I wish him a swift recovery so he can return to his office promptly and ensure that the people of Punjab, who have suffered a severe financial blow due to this disaster, receive timely and fair compensation.”
