Are Child-Lifting Rumors Causing Panic in Jharkhand?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ranchi, Feb 19 (NationPress) The spread of child kidnapping rumors has ignited widespread fear throughout Jharkhand, resulting in numerous instances of mob violence over the last five days. At least 12 incidents of mob violence fueled by suspicion have been documented across various regions in the state, leading police to urgently call for calm.
On Thursday morning, a group of three individuals -- comprising two women and a man -- were confronted and assaulted by a mob in the Edalhatu area of Ranchi due to allegations of child theft. They were reportedly traveling in an auto-rickshaw with a child at the time of the incident.
As per eyewitness accounts, the child began to cry, prompting someone to raise an alarm and claim that a kidnapping was in progress. As the rumor spread, locals quickly gathered, halting the auto-rickshaw and forcibly removing the occupants. The situation escalated rapidly, with the mob attacking without verifying the claims.
Police from the Bariatu station, led by officer-in-charge Manoj Kumar, arrived promptly to rescue the victims, preventing what could have turned into a tragic situation. The three individuals were subsequently taken to the police station for further inquiry.
Initial investigations have not substantiated the presence of any organized child-lifting gang. Authorities have indicated that it remains uncertain whether any genuine abduction attempt was made, and the investigation is ongoing.
This incident in Ranchi is indicative of a troubling trend. In the past five days, similar mob assaults linked to child-lifting rumors have been reported in Dhanbad, Chatra, Jamshedpur, Jamtara, Giridih, Ramgarh, Latehar, and Bokaro.
Three days ago, a man was brutally killed in the Piparwar area of Chatra district after being suspected of child theft. Investigations later revealed that the deceased was mentally unstable and had no connections to any kidnapping activities.
On Wednesday, a mob attacked two women in Dhanbad’s Baghmara area following similar unfounded rumors, but police intervened in time to rescue them.
Earlier, on February 16, six women were assaulted in Bokaro on the suspicion of being part of a child-lifting gang before police ensured their safety.
The Jharkhand Police have urged the community not to take matters into their own hands and to refrain from acting on unverified information circulating on social media, particularly on platforms like WhatsApp. Authorities have also encouraged the public to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station instead of resorting to violence.
