The disbursement was channelled through the Chhattisgarh State Handloom Federation under multiple welfare schemes. Beyond the cash assistance, the event doubled as a recognition ceremony: outstanding weavers received state-level awards, putting names and faces to the craft that the government says it wants to champion. The combination of financial support and public honour was deliberate — welfare and dignity in the same room.

National Handloom Day and Its Swadeshi Roots

National Handloom Day has been observed every 7 August since 2015, the date chosen to mark the anniversary of the 1905 Swadeshi Movement — when Indians first weaponised local production against colonial commerce. That historical echo is not incidental. The Modi government's 'Vocal for Local' campaign, launched as part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat package in May 2020, draws consciously from that same tradition, framing the purchase of a handloom sari or a handcrafted pot as an act of economic patriotism.

CM Sai's post made the lineage explicit: 'Vocal for Local Atmanirbhar Bharat ka mool mantra hai' ('Vocal for Local is the core mantra of Atmanirbhar Bharat'). Adopting local products and honouring weavers and artisans, he wrote, is 'the foundation for empowering our culture, self-respect, and prosperity.'

Chhattisgarh's Weaver Economy in the Frame

Chhattisgarh has a distinct handloom identity — from the Kosa silk of Champa and Raigarh to tribal weave traditions across Bastar. State-level events on National Handloom Day have become a consistent fixture under BJP administrations, used to disburse scheme benefits and elevate indigenous textiles in the public eye. The Village Industries Department's Swadeshi Exhibition, held alongside the weaver conference, extended the event's reach beyond weavers alone to the broader artisan and cottage-industry ecosystem.

The presence of Dr. Raman Singh — who served as Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh for 15 years from 2003 to 2018 and now chairs the state legislature — added institutional weight to the occasion, signalling continuity in the state's approach to weaver welfare across BJP tenures.
