Confronting Ethical Dilemmas of AI and Ensuring Accountability of Social Media in Combatting Misinformation: Ashwini Vaishnaw

New Delhi, Dec 11 (NationPress) Ethical dilemmas surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) and the proliferation of fake news are significant global issues, and India is devoted to addressing these challenges through meaningful debate and responsible innovation, while enforcing accountability on social media platforms, as stated by Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, on Wednesday.

While speaking in Parliament, the minister emphasized the pressing challenges posed by the evolving AI landscape, the need for social media accountability, and the necessity for strong legal frameworks.

The minister pointed out the importance of maintaining a balance between freedom of speech and the responsibility to counter fake news while ensuring the dissemination of accurate narratives in the digital era.

“This is a significant challenge that societies around the globe are facing — the accountability of social media, especially in relation to fake news and the fabrication of false narratives,” Vaishnaw noted.

“These issues juxtapose freedom of speech with the necessity of establishing a credible news network. These are topics that warrant debate, and if there is consensus within the house and society at large, we can formulate new legislation,” the IT Minister remarked.

The Union Minister also addressed privacy concerns and AI governance, detailing proactive measures taken by the government to cultivate indigenous tools and technologies.

Under the 'India AI Mission', one of the fundamental pillars is application development, concentrating on innovations that cater to the unique needs of the country.

“To tackle the evolving landscape of AI, we have launched eight projects aimed at developing tools and technologies domestically,” he stated.

In emphasizing India's global leadership in AI, the minister remarked that the country is at the forefront of shaping global perspectives on AI governance.

“India’s influence continues to be significant in discussions with international organizations, including the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the United Nations,” he concluded.
