New Delhi, April 16 (NationPress) Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera asserted on Wednesday that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) charge sheet against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case is merely a tactic to target the Gandhi family and the Congress party, revealing the government's aim to intimidate them.
The ED submitted its initial charge sheet in the over Rs 600 crore National Herald case on Tuesday, naming Sonia Gandhi as accused number one and Rahul Gandhi as number two in connection with alleged money laundering.
Khera vehemently opposed the money laundering allegations, stating that the National Herald issue is being exploited to target both the Gandhi family and the Congress party, primarily because the historic party has consistently fought for the rights of the people.
“Before Independence, the National Herald, the Congress party, and the Gandhi family faced similar targeting by the British for advocating for the people's rights, and in 2025, the BJP government is repeating this pattern,” he remarked.
He emphasized that both Congress and the Gandhi family have continuously championed the causes of the poor and marginalized communities, affirming their commitment to this mission.
“The ED's actions concerning National Herald illustrate the Modi government’s frustration and resentment towards the Gandhis, as Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi persistently challenges the Centre over its favoritism towards cronies while neglecting the needy,” he pointed out.
Khera accused the BJP and RSS of having a profound aversion to the Congress party and asserted that they will not be intimidated or silenced, regardless of government conspiracies to target them.
“Previous instances such as Rahul Gandhi's disqualification from Parliament and the forced vacating of his government accommodation were part of this broader conspiracy,” he noted.
He further criticized the government for denying the backward classes their rightful privileges, stating, “Whenever Rahul Gandhi advocates for a caste-based census, it seems to unsettle them.”
“We are defenders of the Constitution. We will not succumb to fear or intimidation,” he concluded.
