Guwahati, Feb 24 (NationPress) The Congress party on Monday launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led administration in Assam, highlighting various concerns, including the recent assault on party MP Rakibul Hussain, labeling the past nine years of BJP governance in the northeastern state as inefficient and incompetent.
Jitendra Singh, the Congress in-charge for Assam, remarked: “As Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarks on a two-day visit to Assam, the state has already witnessed two significant incidents of violence.
“We observed BJP supporters attacking Assam police without facing any arrests. Just four days ago, our Lok Sabha MP, Rakibul Hussain, was viciously assaulted by thugs in broad daylight at a bustling marketplace, with the goons even attacking police security and attempting to seize their weapons.”
He further stated that the state Congress president Bhupen Borah was also assaulted in broad daylight.
“This encapsulates the BJP's rule in Assam for nine years – corrupt, inefficient, incompetent, rogue, and divisive. The state is facing a profound crisis,” Singh asserted.
The Congress leader also pointed out that unemployment has surged to unprecedented levels during the BJP's administration, contributing to the deteriorating law and order situation in Assam.
The opposition party also directed criticism towards Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding corruption, raising numerous questions about the business dealings of the CM's spouse.
In a statement, the Congress remarked: “It’s quite remarkable how Assam CM’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, became a business tycoon in just four years! She has reportedly acquired several tea estates.”
Furthermore, it was noted that she has broadened her business horizon by acquiring a news portal, launching a popular fast-food outlet, and founding an international school. Her company allegedly received a central subsidy of Rs 10 crore. It has become widely known in the state that substantial land scams allegedly involving the Chief Minister's family members have occurred.
Singh continued by stating that despite a ban on rathole coal mining imposed by the National Green Tribunal, illegal operations persist in various regions of Assam, leading to the tragic deaths of nine laborers in Umrangso within the Dima Hasao district.
“Kanika Hojai, the wife of the Chief Executive Member of Dima Hasao Autonomous Council, is accused of operating an illicit coal mine in Umrangso and has since gone into hiding. A 2021 report by Justice Brojendra Prasad Katakey revealed rampant illegal mining in the Digboi forest division, resulting in multiple fatal incidents and local authority complicity,” the Congress leader concluded.
