Bhopal, May 13 (NationPress) The Congress party is calling for the resignation of Kunwar Vijay Shah, a Minister in the Madhya Pradesh government, due to his controversial remarks regarding India's esteemed Army officer, Colonel Sofiya Qureshi.
At an event held in Raikunda village, located in Ambedkar Nagar (Mhow), Indore, on Monday, Minister Shah made a contentious statement, alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had sent a "sister" of those responsible for the Pahalgam terror attack that left Indian women widowed.
This comment, which alluded to the recent military operation, Operation Sindoor, was met with approval from the audience.
After a video of the Minister’s speech went viral, the Congress has demanded accountability and urged his resignation from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The President of the State Congress, Jitu Patwari, condemned Shah's remarks and called for the BJP to clarify its stance on the matter.
Patwari also posted the video on social media, emphasizing the need for responsibility.
He argued that the Minister's framing of military decisions in a sectarian and gendered context could heighten tensions.
Concerns have been raised about the political rhetoric being used to justify retaliatory actions under the pretext of governance, as pointed out by Patwari.
Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who was commissioned into the Army Signal Corps in 1994, has served in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir and the North-East.
This is not the first instance of controversy surrounding Vijay Shah.
Prior to the 2013 Assembly elections, he made an inappropriate comment regarding the wife of then Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Sadhna Singh, at an event in Jhabua.
This incident led to a significant backlash and ultimately resulted in Shah's resignation.
In November 2023, Shah expressed interest in meeting actress Vidya Balan while she was filming in Balaghat. After she declined his request, he reportedly attempted to interfere with the production via the Forest Department.
This episode attracted national scrutiny, compelling both the Minister and the State Forest Department to retract their actions.
