Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 17 (NationPress) On Tuesday, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a prominent figure in the Congress party and former Lok Sabha representative, addressed a letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, outlining a series of demands aimed at public welfare during the sacred month of Ramzan and the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr.
He emphasized that both Ramzan and Eid hold profound religious and societal importance for the entire Muslim population. In light of this, he suggested implementing special provisions for ration supplies, establishing a task force to monitor market prices, ensuring a steady supply of electricity and clean drinking water during Iftar and Sehri, increasing train and bus services leading up to Eid, avoiding major exams during the Eid week, modifying office hours to accommodate fasting workers, and declaring at least three days of government holidays.
Chowdhury shared a copy of his correspondence with the Chief Minister on social media, stating, "In honor of the holy month of Ramadan and the forthcoming Eid-ul-Fitr, I have made several requests to the Hon'ble Chief Minister. Ramadan signifies more than just a religious observance; it represents restraint, compassion, and social unity. The government must take proactive measures to ensure that the daily needs and religious practices of the community are met without interruption."
His letter included specific recommendations for action, such as ensuring the special allocation or subsidized pricing of essential goods like rice, pulses, sugar, dried dates, and other necessary items at ration stores, preventing exorbitant price increases for fruits and other essentials during Ramzan, creating a task force for ongoing market oversight, and guaranteeing an uninterrupted electricity supply during Iftar and Sehri.
"We need to ensure a reliable and safe supply of drinking water during Sehri, especially in the early hours before dawn. Additionally, we should enhance passenger convenience by providing extra trains and government bus services at least two weeks prior to Eid, and it would be prudent to refrain from scheduling significant examinations during the week of Eid prayers so that students face no travel-related challenges," he wrote.
He also called for a minimum of three days of government holiday for Eid. "If a holiday is granted the day before and after Eid, many working individuals who reside far from their workplaces will have the opportunity to celebrate Eid with their families. This is crucial for reinforcing family connections, promoting social harmony, and enhancing mental well-being," the Congress leader asserted in his letter.
Chowdhury clarified that his suggestions are not special privileges but rather reflect civic support and administrative empathy during festive times.
"Just as the government implements special provisions for various major festivals, similar efforts during Ramadan and Eid would further bolster social unity and a sense of fairness," he concluded.
