How are Congress Workers Resisting BJP's Bulldozer?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
In Solapur on January 12, the President of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee, Harshwardhan Sapkal, stated that Congress members are standing resolutely without fear of the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) bulldozer. This determination was underscored by the party's success in securing 41 Municipal Council Presidents and 1,006 Corporators' positions.
"Just as we have triumphed in the municipal councils, we will also wave our victorious banner in the municipal corporations," he asserted.
Sapkal criticized the ruling party (Mahayuti) for turning democracy into a mere show, alleging they have utilized financial influence, police support, administrative power, and even the Election Commission to undermine the state’s vibrant culture and traditions. He remarked, "Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has displayed extreme arrogance, bulldozing over opposition parties."
During the local elections, he revealed that three murders occurred, indicating a disturbing trend in the state's political landscape.
"The BJP is offering tickets to members of the koyta gang, operators of the Worli matka, and drug traffickers. In Tuljapur, they've even appointed a drug mafia candidate as Mayor. Not only criminals but also rapists are being shielded by the BJP. Discussions in municipal elections should focus on urban issues, yet the ruling party is debating linguistic preferences and who should become the Mayor -- Marathi or outsiders. Their push for unopposed elections is fundamentally flawed. A ‘None of the Above’ (NOTA) option should be available in these unopposed seats to safeguard democracy," he stated.
Sapkal clarified that Congress is not against capitalists; however, the way the Narendra Modi-led Union government is granting unchecked freedom to select businesses across various sectors poses a significant threat to the nation.
"For the benefit of a few industrialists, the BJP behaves like a servant. If the Congress regains power at the Centre, those companies will be nationalized, similar to how the British government took control of the East India Company," he remarked.
He also mentioned that Congress has allied with the Vanchit Bahujan Aaghadi in areas such as Mumbai, Latur, and Nanded.
"This alliance transcends mere politics; it embodies a convergence of ideologies that must be nurtured. Partners in this alliance should refrain from making unfounded and unnecessary statements," he stressed.
He confirmed that MP Praniti Shinde is part of the Congress and will continue to be associated with the party.
