Srinagar, Nov 12 (NationPress) – On Wednesday, the Jammu and Kashmir Police, alongside various security forces, announced significant operations targeting the banned Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) members in the Valley. This initiative follows the tragic Delhi terror explosion that resulted in the deaths of eight individuals and injuries to numerous others.
Intelligence reports suggest that the Delhi blast may have been driven by Dr Mohd Umar, who was operating an i20 car, indicating a state of panic rather than a planned suicide attack.
However, the fact that Dr Umar has been evading capture after the arrest of his associates linked to white collar terrorism suggests that there was an intent to execute a substantial terrorist operation.
In a sweeping crackdown against the JeI organization, the police conducted coordinated operations at over 200 locations in Kulgam district. These searches targeted the residences and properties of JeI affiliates and their supporters, aiming to dismantle networks that facilitate terrorism and decrease their influence at the grassroots level.
Over the last four days, police reported conducting more than 400 Cordon and Search Operations (CASOs) throughout various regions of the district, including areas previously linked to militant activities and hideouts for Over Ground Workers (OGWs).
In a parallel operation, Sopore Police executed extensive search activities across several locations in Sopore district, focusing on people and properties associated with the JeI, which is prohibited under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Authorities stated that, in the course of these counter-terrorism efforts, simultaneous raids were executed at over 25 locations across Sopore, Zaingeer, and Rafiabad, with assistance from other security personnel.
The operations were based on credible intelligence indicating efforts by JeI-linked individuals to revive their activities under various guises.
“During these operations, a considerable cache of incriminating materials was seized, including documents, digital devices, and printed materials linked to the banned organization for further investigation. Numerous individuals are currently being interrogated to determine their involvement in illegal activities,” police reported.
In Anantnag district, nearly 500 individuals connected to banned organizations, including JeI members and relatives of JKNOPs (Jammu and Kashmir natives operating from Pakistan), have undergone interrogation. Some have reportedly been detained and moved to the District Jail Mattan in Anantnag under preventive detention laws.
During these raids, police confiscated significant incriminating documents, electronic devices, and other materials of evidentiary importance. Several JeI affiliates were also questioned to identify larger networks allegedly supporting terrorism.
In Shopian district, police executed searches at various locations, targeting the homes of JeI activists. The premises of Dr Hameed Fayaz in Naidgam and Mohammad Yousuf Falahie in Chitragam were among those searched during these operations.
These searches are part of ongoing investigations in the region.
