CT Ravi accuses Congress of anti-Hindu politics at Bengaluru rally
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLC and former National General Secretary C.T. Ravi on Monday alleged that the Congress is pursuing anti-Hindu politics, firing back at Opposition leaders who had targeted the BJP at a party event in Bengaluru. Ravi's remarks came in response to allegations made by senior Congress figures at the assumption-of-office ceremony of newly appointed Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President B.K. Hariprasad.
What Triggered the Remarks
At the KPCC event, former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, All India Congress Committee (AICC) President Mallikarjun Kharge, and Hariprasad accused the BJP of being anti-democratic and anti-Constitution. Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Ravi dismissed these charges as baseless, turning the allegation squarely back on the Congress.
'Those who are truly opposed to the Constitution are Congress leaders themselves,' Ravi said.
Hindutva and the Constitution
Ravi argued that the Indian Constitution itself contains images of Lord Ram, Lord Krishna, and Gautama Buddha, and contended that India's civilisational identity is rooted in the philosophies of Buddha and Basavanna. He cited the Supreme Court's characterisation of Hindutva as 'a way of life' to reinforce his position.
'There is respect for all paths and faiths in Indian thought. Congress leaders make allegations without understanding these aspects,' he said. Ravi further asserted that 'without Hindutva, India cannot survive,' warning that the alternative would be a trajectory similar to Afghanistan or Pakistan.
Congress and Constitutional Amendments
Ravi accused the Congress of amending the Constitution for political gain, claiming that of the 106 amendments made to the Constitution so far, 76 were carried out under Congress governments. He alleged that the words 'socialist' and 'secular' were inserted into the Constitution without adequate parliamentary discussion, and further claimed that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar had opposed such changes.
'Congress made these amendments for its own benefit and to misuse power,' he alleged. He also invoked the Emergency period, accusing the Congress of strangling democracy by curtailing fundamental rights and imprisoning Opposition leaders.
Dynasty vs. Democratic Leadership
Ravi drew a sharp contrast between Prime Minister Narendra Modi — whom he described as a leader elected through public mandate — and Rahul Gandhi, whom he characterised as a product of political inheritance rather than grassroots democratic struggle.
'After Jawaharlal Nehru came Indira Gandhi, then Rajiv Gandhi, followed by Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. True democracy requires leaders to emerge through public struggles and engagement with people's lives,' he said.
Congress Losing Ground, Ravi Claims
Ravi alleged that the Congress is paying an electoral price for its approach, claiming the party has been losing power across states due to its anti-Hindu politics. This comes amid ongoing BJP efforts to consolidate its position in Karnataka, where the Congress currently governs after its victory in the 2023 Assembly elections. Whether Ravi's remarks will sharpen the political contest ahead of future electoral cycles in the state remains to be seen.
