Delhi BJP Leader Claims 50% Reduction in Power Bill Levy Due to Protests

New Delhi, Dec 27 (NationPress) Consumers in Delhi are poised for a reduction in their electricity bills, following the directive from the power regulator mandating discoms to lower the monthly Power Purchase Adjustment Cost (PPAC), announced by Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva on Friday. He asserted that the almost 50% decrease in the levy is a result of their efforts.

Sachdeva shared a copy of the order issued by the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) on December 20, instructing BSES Rajdhani Power to adjust the PPAC for the upcoming quarter beginning December 20. He criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for imposing additional charges on honest power consumers.

“Our representatives raised this concern in the Delhi Assembly, but the previous Arvind Kejriwal administration continued to exploit power users,” Sachdeva told IANS.

Describing the inflated electricity charges under the AAP regime as a form of exploitation, Sachdeva expressed gratitude to the Lieutenant Governor for intervening, which led to a reduction of the levy from 35-38% to 13-18%.

Providing specifics from the DERC order, Sachdeva noted that prior to this ruling, the PPAC for BRPL was 35.83%, BYPL at 38.12%, and TPDDL at 36.33%.

“Following the DERC's decision, the new PPAC rates for Delhi discoms will be BRPL 18.19%, BYPL 13.63%, and TPDDL 20.52%,” he stated.

The DERC's ruling on the BRPL application noted, “Currently, the ongoing PPAC stands at 27.08%, effective until December 20, 2024. The PPAC for the second quarter of FY 2024-25 is calculated at 9.44%. Therefore, the petitioner is permitted to recover a PPAC of 9.44% for three months post December 20, 2024—from December 21, 2024, to March 20, 2025.”

Earlier, Sachdeva addressed a letter to L-G V.K. Saxena on July 15 concerning this issue and spearheaded protests outside discom offices, demanding the retraction of increased PPAC and pension surcharges.

Sachdeva hailed the reduction in PPAC as a triumph for the common citizen and the Delhi BJP, emphasizing that the public should be aware that the newly appointed Chief Minister Atishi had approved an additional 8% hike in PPAC while the DERC was examining the BRPL case.

“We successfully halted this proposed increase by CM Atishi,” Sachdeva remarked.
