Delhi: Waseem arrested for planting pistols to frame brother-in-law
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Delhi Police arrested a 28-year-old man, Mohd. Waseem, a resident of Sunder Nagri, for allegedly planting illegal firearms at his brother-in-law's residence in the Welcome area of New Delhi to falsely implicate him in an Arms Act case, officials said on Sunday, 2 August 2026. Two country-made pistols were recovered from Waseem's possession, leading to the registration of a fresh case against him.
How the Conspiracy Unravelled
According to police, the operation began during the investigation of FIR No. 388/2026 under Section 25 of the Arms Act. A team from Welcome Police Station — comprising Head Constables Lalit, Harender, Kuldeep, and Constables Ravi and Soni, supervised by Inspector Rupesh Kumar Khatri, SHO of Welcome PS — tracked Waseem to a mobile repair shop at Rajiv Colony, Gali No. 4, near DLF Border, Ghaziabad, where he was apprehended on 31 July 2026.
Waseem initially gave false statements to mislead investigators. Under sustained questioning, he reportedly confessed to orchestrating a deliberate frame-up against his brother-in-law, 29-year-old Mohd. Ashraf, also a resident of Sunder Nagri.
The Motive: A Family Dispute
According to police, the alleged conspiracy stemmed from a personal grievance. Waseem harboured deep resentment against Ashraf because the latter had married a member of Waseem's family against the family's wishes. Driven by this enmity, Waseem reportedly planted three country-made pistols at Ashraf's rented house at JB-6/199, Welcome area, on separate occasions.
Waseem then allegedly tipped off police using the fictitious name 'Arjun', directing them to the concealed weapons. As a result, Ashraf was arrested after one country-made pistol was recovered from the premises on 16 July 2026 in connection with FIR No. 388/2026.
Recovery of Additional Weapons
Following Waseem's disclosure, a raiding team led by the SHO of Welcome PS returned to the premises. In the presence of house owner Anwar and accused Ashraf, Waseem reportedly pointed out the exact locations where the remaining weapons had been concealed. A thorough search led to the recovery of two more country-made pistols from the house.
On the basis of this fresh recovery, FIR No. 416/2026 under Section 25 of the Arms Act was registered at Welcome PS against Mohd. Waseem, and he was formally arrested.
Investigation Ongoing
Police confirmed that further investigation is underway to establish all aspects of the alleged conspiracy. The case highlights a pattern of misuse of anonymous tip-offs to settle personal scores — a challenge law enforcement agencies across Delhi have increasingly flagged. The status of the original case against Ashraf in light of this development is expected to be reviewed as the probe progresses.
