Traffic Disruption in Delhi-Noida Corridor Due to Workers’ Protest
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Noida, April 13 (NationPress) Traffic flow between Delhi and Noida faced significant disruptions on Monday due to a workers’ protest in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddha Nagar district that turned violent, leading the authorities to release an advisory and redirect commuters.
The Delhi Traffic Police reported that congestion increased along the Noida Link Road, as workers from private factories continued their agitation. Protesters obstructed the route from the Chilla Border, causing severe delays for vehicles traveling from Delhi to Noida.
In their advisory, traffic authorities recommended that commuters plan their trips in advance and seek alternative paths. Those heading to Noida were encouraged to utilize other routes, such as the DND Flyway from Sarai Kale Khan or the NH-24 via Kondli Bridge, entering Noida through Noida Mod.
This disruption coincided with escalating tensions in Noida, where a protest by workers in Phase 2 became violent earlier in the day.
Thousands of workers, advocating for increased wages and improved working conditions, had been conducting a sit-in protest for three days. On Monday, their agitation escalated as large groups filled the streets across various industrial sectors.
In Sector 62, significant gatherings of workers contributed to severe traffic jams, exacerbating the disruption caused by blockades near the Delhi-Noida border.
Authorities deployed a substantial police presence to manage the situation and prevent further unrest. Efforts are underway to restore normalcy and ensure the safety of both commuters and industrial facilities.
The unrest persists despite recent commitments from the district administration. On Sunday, officials met with company and worker representatives, assuring action on critical demands.
District Magistrate Medha Roopam announced that new directives were introduced to address labor issues, including mandatory double wages for overtime, guaranteed weekly days off, and double compensation for work on designated rest days.
She emphasized that all companies must disburse salaries by the 10th of each month, ensure bonus payments comply with regulations, and deposit wages directly into employees' bank accounts. Employers are also required to issue salary slips and refrain from unauthorized deductions, with strict penalties for non-compliance.
A dedicated control room has been established to address worker grievances. The administration has urged workers to remain calm, avoid spreading rumors, and collaborate with authorities to uphold law and order.
