New Delhi, June 11 (NationPress) In a major success in the fight against street crime in the National Capital, the South West Delhi District Police have apprehended two repeat offenders known for their snatching activities, along with one individual involved in receiving stolen goods.
The arrests were the result of a collaborative effort from the Anti-Snatching Cell and the Safdarjung Enclave Police Station, which followed a comprehensive investigation into a string of snatching incidents in the vicinity. This operation has successfully resolved four cases of gold chain snatching.
The South West District Police reported, “The apprehended individuals include two infamous snatchers, Anil and Arun, along with Mohd Imran, a receiver of stolen property. All three are notorious for their involvement in multiple chain snatchings and are known to be habitual offenders.”
As per police records, Anil, a resident of Dakshinpuri, has an extensive criminal background with over 40 cases including murder, attempted murder, robbery, and snatching. Meanwhile, Arun, hailing from Madangir, has been implicated in at least 18 similar cases. Both are categorized as ‘bad characters’ (B.C.s) in the records of PS Ambedkar Nagar.
The police operation was initiated after a report on May 28 from a 22-year-old woman named Riya, who stated that two unidentified men on a motorcycle snatched her gold chain in the Green Park area. Following this, FIR No. 242/25 was filed at the Safdarjung Enclave police station, launching a thorough investigation.
“The investigative team scrutinized over 200 CCTV cameras within a 10-kilometer radius of the crime scene and traced the suspects by tracking their vehicles—an Apache and a Splendor motorcycle, which are frequently used in such crimes,” the police disclosed.
The inquiry uncovered that the suspects employed various strategies to avoid capture, such as changing their attire after each incident, using helmets during the thefts, and maneuvering in a zigzag pattern to distort CCTV footage.
Upon their arrest, the suspects directed the police to the receiver, Mohd Imran, who confessed to buying the stolen gold chains and pawning them for loans. All three individuals are now in custody.
“The police recovered two motorcycles used in the crimes and four gold chains,” the statement confirmed.
Additionally, it was revealed that the suspects had previous involvement in a police encounter case registered with the Special Cell.
Deputy Commissioner of Police for the South West District, Amit Goel, IPS, commended the team's dedication and confirmed that further investigations are ongoing.
