Did Delhi Police Register FIR Over Alleged Inflammatory Slogans in JNU Viral Video?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 7 (NationPress) The Delhi Police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) regarding a widely circulated video on social media, which allegedly depicts students chanting provocative slogans on the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus, sources confirmed on Wednesday.
As per reports, the FIR has been lodged under Sections 352 and 353 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertain to assault and the use of criminal force, as well as actions that may disrupt public order. The case was initiated following an initial review of the video and the complaints received regarding the incident.
The video, which surfaced online earlier this week, reportedly shows a group of students affiliated with Left-leaning organizations raising slogans during a campus event.
According to police evaluations, the slogans were deemed inflammatory and potentially capable of inciting public unrest.
The slogans allegedly included derogatory references directed at the country's political leadership.
The chanting occurred during a protest related to the ongoing judicial custody of former JNU students Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid, both of whom face separate charges and have been seeking bail.
The protest escalated into the use of contentious language, which subsequently became the focus of the viral video.
Several Left-wing student organizations at JNU voiced their dissent against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a gathering at the 'Guerrilla Dhaba' on campus.
This incident took place on Monday evening, shortly after the Supreme Court denied bail to former JNU students Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots case.
Approximately 30 to 40 students associated with the Democratic Students' Federation (DSF), All India Students' Association (AISA), and Students' Federation of India (SFI) participated in the protest, voicing anti-government sentiments.
The slogans prompted a strong backlash from the BJP, which condemned the Left-leaning groups and connected the protest to the denial of bail to Khalid and Imam.
BJP officials characterized the demonstrators as part of what they refer to as the 'tukde ecosystem' and labeled them as 'urban Naxals'.
BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla stated, "These slogans chanted by the Tukde ecosystem in JNU after Sharjeel Umar was denied bail. This is an anti-India group of Urban Naxals... Votebank ke naam par Umar Sharjeel Bachao Gang kaam par."
Another BJP spokesperson, Pradeep Bhandari, also criticized the event through a social media post.
In his post, he stated, "Urban Naxals supporting anti-national Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam protested late at night in JNU outside Sabarmati Hostel. This is not a protest; this is an appropriation of anti-India thought! Intellectual terrorists can be academics, doctors, or engineers."
Union Minister Giriraj Singh remarked, "JNU has become a hub for the so-called 'tukde-tukde' gang, which includes Rahul Gandhi, the TMC, Left parties, and various opposition forces. It has become a camp office for this group, and the nation will not tolerate this."
This incident has once again drawn attention to JNU concerning issues of campus protests and political expression.
