Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 6 (NationPress) The chief security officer (CSO) of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Naveen Yadav, submitted a request to the Delhi Police on Tuesday, calling for the filing of an FIR regarding objectionable slogans directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah during a campus event.
On Monday, several Left-wing student organizations expressed their dissent by raising anti-Modi and Shah slogans at JNU's 'Guerrilla Dhaba'. This demonstration coincided with the sixth anniversary of the January 2020 attack on students and faculty by masked assailants.
In his correspondence to the Vasant Kunj SHO, the CSO detailed that the event, titled 'A Night of Resistance with Guerrilla Dhaba', took place outside the Sabarmati Hostel to honor the attack's anniversary.
Initially, the gathering seemed focused on paying tribute, with approximately 30-35 students present. Notable participants included Aditi Mishra, Gopika Babu, Sunil Yadav, Danish Ali, Saad Azmi, Mehboob Ilahi, Kanishk, Pakeeza Khan, Shubham, among others.
However, Yadav noted that the mood shifted significantly after the Supreme Court dismissed bail applications for former students Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam related to the 2020 Delhi riots case, leading to the emergence of provocative and inflammatory slogans.
He asserted that these slogans constituted a direct contempt of the Supreme Court of India and were inconsistent with the principles of democratic dissent. Furthermore, he emphasized that such actions violate the JNU Code of Conduct and could disrupt campus harmony and safety.
The slogans were described as deliberate, audible, and repeated, indicating a conscious intent rather than a spontaneous outburst.
Yadav pointed out that the incident reflects a wilful disregard for institutional discipline and the peaceful academic ethos of the university.
Security personnel were present during the event, including Inspector (SSS) Gorkhanath, Supervisor Vishal Kumar, and Guards Jai Kumar Meena and Pooja, who were monitoring the situation closely.
In his letter, he urged the police to file an FIR under relevant sections of the law.
This incident occurred on Monday evening, following the Supreme Court's decision to deny bail to Khalid and Imam.
A protest involving 30 to 40 students from organizations such as the Democratic Students' Federation (DSF), All India Students' Association (AISA), and Students' Federation of India (SFI) took place, during which slogans like 'Modi-Shah ki kabra khudegi, JNU ki dharti par' were raised.
