New Delhi, Jan 6 (NationPress) The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) unit at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has vehemently criticized the provocative slogans aimed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah that were shouted on campus. They assert that even the office-bearers of the student body, primarily led by Leftist factions, participated in the demonstrations.

The ABVP has called for a police inquiry into the matter and insists on severe repercussions for those implicated.

During a gathering at the 'Guerrilla Dhaba' on campus, various Left-aligned student organizations voiced these slogans.

This event transpired on Monday night, shortly following the Supreme Court's denial of bail for former JNU students Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, related to the 2020 Delhi riots.

Approximately 30 to 40 students from the Democratic Students' Federation (DSF), All India Students' Association (AISA), and Students' Federation of India (SFI) took part in the protest, chanting anti-government slogans.

One of the slogans included, 'Modi-Shah ki kabra khudegi, JNU ki dharti par.'

Manish Choudhary, a leader from ABVP (JNU unit), alleged that the JNU office-bearers—including the President, Vice President, Joint Secretary, and Secretary—along with former members and alumni, were present during the chanting at the university.

In an interview with IANS, Choudhary remarked, 'These individuals mobilized ordinary students under the guise of other protests, ultimately directing them to rally against the Supreme Court's ruling and voicing contentious slogans against the Prime Minister and Home Minister.'

He also noted that some protesters shouted slogans against ABVP and RSS, asserting that such actions 'undermine India's social cohesion and the efforts of those tirelessly working for the nation’s advancement.'

Condemning the incident, he stated, 'I strongly denounce these acts and call upon the administration and police to take decisive action against the culprits.'

'We will file a formal complaint with the campus administration and urge the police to take suo motu cognizance and act firmly. All involved should be held accountable. Those on the JNU campus supporting Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid must also be penalized, as they belong behind bars,' Choudhary emphasized.

ABVP JNU Secretary Praveen Piyush criticized the protesters for 'romanticizing' the convicts of the Delhi riots.

In his conversation with IANS, he accused them, stating, 'They are not students; they are Left-wing extremists and radical organizations. Under the facade of propaganda, they engage in such activities. Recently, a mayor from the United States sent a letter to Umar Khalid, indicating how they have been persistently undermining India’s sovereignty through foreign propaganda.'

'Such actions are utterly reprehensible... I want to question whose grave they intend to dig? The Prime Minister's? The Supreme Court’s? The Constitution?' he added.

Point of View

I believe it is vital to understand the complexity of student activism within our educational institutions. While freedom of expression is paramount, it must be balanced with respect for our democratic institutions. The recent sloganeering incident at JNU underscores the need for dialogue and accountability in our universities, aligning with the values of a cohesive and progressive society.
