New Delhi, July 3 (NationPress) During the 'Van Mahotsav 2025' festivities, Delhi's Chief Minister Rekha Gupta planted a sapling and criticized the former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) administration for neglecting the city's environmental needs and failing to promote the 'Ek ped maa ke naam' initiative.
After planting a sapling at Delhi Ridge, CM Gupta asserted, "The earlier governments have consistently ignored plantation efforts, showing no concern for Delhi's air quality."
"With Van Mahotsav 2025, the Delhi government is creating a new narrative in the battle against pollution," she added.
"Every resident should engage in the Mahotsav and participate in Bhagidari," she urged, as Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa and others accompanied her at the location.
The formal opening of the Van Mahotsav took place at Bharat Mandapam, attended by dignitaries, environmental advocates, business leaders, students, and numerous other participants.
A public exhibition was also launched, remaining open from July 3 to July 4.
At the event, CM Gupta remarked, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision is revolutionary. The vision of any public figure or politician defines their greatness. This Mahotsav focuses on saving our planet, reflecting our patriotism as it emphasizes the protection of our mother Earth."
She further praised PM Modi's commitment to eliminating colonial-era mindsets and introducing new criminal laws.
Sirsa characterized the Van Mahotsav as a significant milestone in Delhi's pollution battle. "When PM Modi launched the 'Ek ped maa ke naam' campaign, the then Chief Minister of Delhi declined to participate in planting trees under it," he noted.
He elaborated that the month-long Van Mahotsav 2025 aims to enhance Delhi's green cover and strengthen citizens' emotional bond with nature.
"We have committed to planting over 70 lakh trees across Delhi, and this Van Mahotsav signifies a crucial step towards fulfilling that promise—not merely in numbers but in cultivating a green consciousness," he stated.
During the ceremony, he reaffirmed the Delhi government’s commitment to preserving the city’s biodiversity, adding, "Delhi's forests host leopards, Blue Bulls, and many other species. Some residents travel up to 400 km just to see these animals, which are right here in our city."
The Van Mahotsav will feature a grand 'Van Mela' showcasing exotic, ornamental, and medicinal plants, along with the complimentary distribution of saplings, the Minister announced.
"Van Mahotsav is more than just a plantation initiative—it’s a celebration of our green commitment, a tribute to nature, and a deeply emotional journey. We are transforming it into a mass movement in Delhi, engaging every citizen, leader, and community, because fighting pollution calls for collective climate awareness," Sirsa emphasized.
He mentioned that daily tree-planting activities will occur throughout July 1-31, with each day encouraging the people of Delhi to plant a tree in honor of their mothers, resonating with the heartfelt spirit of the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' initiative.
