Guwahati, Jan 14 (NationPress) The Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police on Tuesday confiscated over 1.128 kg of heroin valued at Rs nine crore and apprehended two narcotics peddlers from Manipur, according to officials.

An official spokesperson from Assam Police stated that the STF agents intercepted an SUV at Amingaon in Kamrup district and discovered the heroin concealed in hidden compartments within the vehicle.

The drugs were cleverly stashed in 94 soap boxes.

Officials reported that the heroin was trafficked from Myanmar and transported through Mizoram to reach Assam. The STF apprehended the driver, Onkhogin Touthing, and the co-driver, Thangkhaelien, both hailing from Churachandpur district in Manipur.

The spokesperson mentioned that the vehicle originated from Mizoram, and the driver along with the co-driver intended to distribute the drugs to local dealers in Hajo and Goreswar, specifically targeting Nurul Hussain (of Dampur, Hajo) and Bitul Ali (of Goreswar).

Additionally, the STF also arrested Hussain and Ali.

A legal case has been filed under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1985.

In the previous week, the Assam Police had seized narcotics worth over Rs 11 crore in three distinct operations across the state’s Cachar and Karbi Anglong districts.

Authorities confiscated 1.17 kg of heroin valued at Rs 5.1 crore from the Dighar Fulertol area in Cachar district, while 73.97 kg of ganja worth Rs 38 lakh was seized from Dhanehari.

Furthermore, police intercepted a bus arriving from a neighboring state at Dillai Tiniali and seized another 1.22 kg of heroin worth Rs 6 crore in Karbi Anglong district.

Officials indicated that a significant portion of drugs trafficked from Myanmar makes its way to Assam, Tripura, and other Indian states, as well as internationally via Mizoram, which has a 510 km unfenced border with Myanmar.

Among the 11 districts in Mizoram, six districts -- Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip -- share a boundary with Myanmar's Chin state. The majority of the narcotics, including highly addictive methamphetamine tablets (commonly referred to as Yaba tablets) and heroin, are illicitly traded through Champhai district.
