Congress Amritsar MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla on 20 September 2026 responded to the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) election outcome by asserting that victories and defeats are a natural and ongoing feature of the democratic process. His remarks came after the Congress-backed student wing, the National Students' Union of India (NSUI), failed to win a single post in the DUSU polls.

ABVP Sweeps Three of Four DUSU Seats

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), won three of the four contested posts in the DUSU elections held on Saturday. The NSUI, backed by the Indian National Congress (Congress), was shut out entirely, failing to secure even one post — a result widely seen as a setback for the party's campus presence in the national capital.

Aujla's Reaction: 'Accept the Mandate with Humility'

Speaking to reporters, Aujla said the verdict of students and voters must be respected unconditionally. 'Students and voters make decisions based on their own understanding. In a democracy, whatever decision or mandate the public or voters deliver must be accepted with complete humility,' he said. He added that regardless of whether results favour or go against the organisation, 'the public's decision must always be respected.'

Aujla indicated that the NSUI would continue to prioritise student issues, saying, 'The organisation will continue to work on student issues' — signalling no intent to step back from campus-level engagement despite the defeat. Notably, this outcome continues a pattern in which the ABVP has dominated DUSU elections over several cycles, maintaining a strong grip on Delhi University's student body.

Concerns Over Punjab's Law and Order

During the same media interaction, Aujla trained attention on what he described as a deteriorating security situation in Punjab. He cited incidents involving attacks on police and security personnel, as well as multiple grenade-related incidents in the state, holding the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led state government responsible for the slide. 'The situation in the state has become extremely worrying... Criminals are emboldened due to weak leadership and administrative failure,' he said.

Aujla specifically referenced the killing of one of the accused in the Punjab Police ASI Harjit Singh murder case during a late-night encounter, calling on the police to act decisively. 'The police must perform their duties diligently, and criminals who violate the law must not be spared under any circumstances; they must receive the strictest punishment under the law,' he said.

Peace March and a Broader Message

On the occasion of a Peace March held to mark World Peace Day, Aujla stressed the need for harmony both within society and in the context of ongoing global tensions. 'Maintaining peace and harmony is of paramount importance in today's times. Whether it's the ongoing tensions globally or within society, every individual must cultivate peace within themselves and work together to maintain harmony in society,' he said.

With the DUSU results now final, all attention shifts to how the NSUI recalibrates its campus strategy ahead of future student body elections at universities across the country.
