The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) secured a dominant victory in the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections on Saturday, 19 September 2026, winning three of the four contested posts and reducing the Congress-backed National Students' Union of India (NSUI) to zero seats. Political observers and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders swiftly framed the result as a rejection of opposition student politics at one of India's most prominent universities.

Election Results at a Glance

ABVP's Yash Dabas claimed the DUSU President post, defeating NSUI's Vijay Shankar Meena by a margin of 2,053 votes — Dabas polled 24,576 votes against Meena's 22,523. ABVP's Riya Chhawadi won the Secretary's post and ABVP's Lakshyaraj Singh secured the Joint Secretary's post. The sole post that eluded the ABVP was that of Vice President, which went to Independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen.

Voter turnout stood at 40.46 per cent across 52 polling centres — the highest recorded in the past three years. In comparison, turnout last year was 39.5 per cent, suggesting renewed student engagement in campus politics.

What BJP Leaders Said

BJP National President Nitin Nabin congratulated the ABVP on what he called a 'historic victory.' 'This victory reflects the youth's continued faith in positive and constructive student politics, rooted in the spirit of Nation First, and their strong resolve to contribute to the vision of a Viksit Bharat,' he wrote in a post on X.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also posted on X, saying: 'This victory is a symbol of the unwavering faith of the youth in the Nation First policy. I am confident that ABVP will continue to work with the same dedication and commitment to student interests, national service, and nation-building.'

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju argued that the result exposed what he called the hollow nature of the opposition's student outreach campaign. 'The landslide victory of ABVP at Delhi University shows that what Congress and the opposition parties go around calling Chhatron Ki Goonj is actually Jhooth Ki Goonj,' he said.

The NSUI Factor and What the Numbers Mean

The NSUI had previously dominated DUSU for extended periods. Its failure to win a single post this cycle marks a significant reversal. BJP leaders attributed this to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's student outreach, which they characterised as 'misleading and misguiding the youth.' The NSUI has not immediately responded publicly to the results.

Notably, the ABVP also performed strongly in North Campus, which hosts some of India's most competitive colleges including SRCC, Hindu College, Hansraj, KMC, Ramjas, and the Law Faculty.
