Ecuador FM Sommerfeld begins key India visit on April 29
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ecuador's Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld will visit India from 29 April to 1 May 2025, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Tuesday, 28 April. The visit marks a significant step in deepening bilateral ties between India and the South American nation, with a packed schedule of high-level meetings across trade, health, and diplomacy.
Key Meetings Scheduled
Sommerfeld, who also holds the portfolio of Ecuador's Minister of Human Mobility, will hold discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Wednesday, 30 April. She is subsequently scheduled to visit Rajghat and pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, before meeting Minister of Health and Family Welfare J.P. Nadda, Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita in the evening.
Background: Margherita's Ecuador Visit Last November
The visit builds on groundwork laid in November 2024, when Minister of State Margherita travelled to Ecuador on an official visit, calling on President Daniel Noboa Azin and holding discussions on enhancing and diversifying bilateral cooperation. During that trip, Margherita met Ecuadorian ministers, vice ministers, and officials to deepen cooperation across key sectors including agriculture, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, training, education, culture, tourism, trade, textiles, health, and pharmaceuticals.
Notably, Margherita and Sommerfeld also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation between the diplomatic training institutions of the two countries, and jointly inaugurated the resident Embassy of India in Quito — underscoring India's commitment to strengthening its partnership with Ecuador.
Recent Diplomatic Engagements
In December 2024, MoS Margherita met Ecuador's Ambassador to India Fernando Bucheli Vargas in New Delhi, discussing ways to strengthen ties and collaborate in areas of common interest. This comes amid a broader Indian push to deepen diplomatic and economic footprints across Latin America, with Ecuador emerging as a key partner in the region.
Diplomatic History Between India and Ecuador
India and Ecuador established diplomatic ties in 1969. The two nations signed an MoU for holding Foreign Office Consultations in 2000. According to the MEA, five rounds of Foreign Office Consultations have been held so far — in 2005, 2008, 2011, 2014, and 2023. Sommerfeld's visit is expected to set the agenda for the next round of consultations and potentially unlock new areas of bilateral cooperation.
