Shillong, April 3 (NationPress) Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma stated on Thursday that ongoing efforts aim to address the border dispute with Assam, emphasizing that measures are being adopted to foster peace and harmony.
Discussing the challenges at the Assam-Meghalaya border, he remarked: "Both the Assam and Meghalaya governments, together with the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, are committed to collaborating in harmony to uphold peace."
He highlighted the absence of schools in the disputed regions, where children often study beneath trees or in private homes. However, through coordinated efforts with Assam and the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, Meghalaya has initiated the construction of a school in one of these contested areas, utilizing funds from the Chief Minister Special Development Fund (CMSDF).
“The government is actively collaborating in numerous areas to ensure that the people receive the development they rightfully deserve. While challenges persist, the government is dedicated to resolving these issues,” he asserted.
The Chief Minister participated in the Golden Jubilee Celebration of the All Meghalaya Karbi Association (AMKA) at Purduwa Kharpati in Ri Bhoi District.
Addressing the shared history and kinship among the state's various tribes, the Chief Minister affirmed, “Despite our diverse communities and tribes, I assure every citizen of Meghalaya that regardless of your tribe or religion, being a part of Meghalaya makes you equally important. It is our duty as leaders and as a government to guarantee that all individuals receive the development, protection, and rights they deserve.”
Emphasizing the significance of preserving the state's cultural diversity, the Chief Minister announced a grant of Rs 50 lakh for the creation of a Karbi Culture Centre. He stated that the government is supporting various minority groups to preserve their culture and traditions.
"The government’s mission is to ensure inclusivity for all communities. Culture is vital to our identity, shaping who we are—whether Khasi, Garo, Rabha, Koch, Hajong, or Karbi," he concluded.
