Four Nepali nationals arrested after Vidhana Soudha brawl in Bengaluru
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Four Nepali nationals were arrested on 30 June 2025 following a street brawl on the footpath opposite Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru, after a video of the violent altercation went viral on social media and drew widespread concern over public disorder at one of the city's most prominent landmarks.
What Happened
According to police, the incident took place on the evening of 28 June within the jurisdiction of the Vidhana Soudha Police Station. The four arrested individuals — identified as Shakti, Ishwar, Dipendra, and a fourth person — are all natives of Baitadi district in Nepal.
An 18-second video circulating on social media shows members of two groups dragging and assaulting each other in broad daylight on the pavement directly in front of the State Legislature building, in full view of tourists visiting the site.
How the Fight Started
Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused were employed as security guards at a private establishment in J.M. Pallya, Kaggadasapura, Bengaluru. According to police, the group had travelled to Chamarajpet the previous Sunday to attend a gathering. The dispute allegedly erupted on the return journey when one group reportedly obstructed another while photographs were being taken near Vidhana Soudha. The verbal argument quickly escalated into a physical altercation on the footpath.
Police Response and Investigation
Based on a formal complaint, the Vidhana Soudha Police registered a case and arrested four of the accused. Investigators are continuing efforts to identify and trace other individuals believed to have participated in the clash. Police said further arrests have not been ruled out pending a full determination of each person's role.
A Recurring Pattern
This is not the first such incident involving Nepali nationals in Bengaluru. In November last year, police arrested 11 persons of Nepali origin following a group clash allegedly triggered by a dispute involving a young woman, in which members of rival factions reportedly assaulted each other with wooden sticks. The latest episode has renewed concerns about recurring public disorder incidents in and around high-footfall civic spaces.
Vidhana Soudha, which houses the Karnataka state legislature, draws a large volume of tourists — particularly on weekends and public holidays — making incidents of this nature especially visible. Authorities are expected to continue their investigation and determine whether the case warrants additional charges.
