New Delhi, April 23 (NationPress) In a significant move by the education ministry, the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune and the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) in Kolkata have officially been designated as Institutions Deemed to be Universities.

This notification allows both institutions to offer doctoral, research, and innovative academic programs.

The education ministry announced on Wednesday that these institutes will now operate in accordance with UGC norms and the guidelines set forth in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Furthermore, they will be involved in NIRF rankings and will integrate with the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC).

This designation was granted under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, based on the recommendations of the UGC.

An official from the ministry stated, “In alignment with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, this historic decision opens the door for enhanced autonomy, innovation, and excellence in film and media education.”

The education ministry noted that an online application was submitted by the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute Society (SRFTI Society) via the UGC's portal for the grant of deemed university status.

Following this, the UGC recommended issuing a Letter of Intent (LoI) to the SRFTI Society, contingent upon fulfilling certain stipulations prior to declaring the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) in Kolkata, West Bengal, as an Institution deemed to be University.

In January of this year, the SRFTI Society provided a compliance report addressing the conditions of the LoI. This report was subsequently verified and approved by the UGC Expert Committee.

The UGC Expert Committee's recommendation was discussed and ratified by the Commission during its recent 588th meeting.

Exercising the powers conferred under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, the education ministry, following the UGC's advice, has now declared the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), located on Eastern Metropolitan Bypass, Panchasayar, Kolkata, West Bengal, as an Institution deemed to be University under a distinct category.

This declaration is subject to certain conditions, as noted by the official.

Similarly, the Film and Television Institute of India Society in Pune also submitted an online application for deemed university status under a distinct category. The application was made via the UGC's deemed universities application portal, and after completing all necessary procedures, the status was granted to the institution.
