Rahul Gandhi Demands Cancellation of US Trade Deal
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhopal, Feb 24 (NationPress) In a vigorous critique, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of capitulating to U.S. interests regarding the trade agreement. While addressing the Maha Kisan Sammelan, he highlighted recent events, including the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to reject tariffs from the Trump administration and the withdrawal of multiple nations from U.S. trade agreements, questioning why the Prime Minister has been mute on these matters.
During the farmers' convention, which saw the presence of party President Mallikarjun Kharge, Gandhi asserted that the proposed deal mandates India to purchase goods worth Rs 9 lakh crore from the U.S. within five years, jeopardizing local industries, particularly in textiles and agriculture.
He claimed that the textile industry is already under severe strain, with the U.S. offering zero percent tariffs to Bangladesh while pressuring India to import cotton, threatening India's textile sector.
"The textile industry has faced devastation, and now America proclaims it will assist Bangladesh with zero tariffs on textiles, while India is coerced into buying cotton from the U.S. or face dire consequences," he stated.
Gandhi further accused PM Modi of compromising India's sovereignty and yielding to American demands to preserve his political standing.
"Narendra Modi ji has surrendered everything under duress... to protect his image and political future," he declared, directly urging the Prime Minister to terminate the deal.
He also referenced undisclosed evidence, comprising emails, messages, and videos, which he claimed had yet to be revealed.
Gandhi called upon Congress members, including Youth Congress supporters, to remain steadfast, recalling the party's significant contributions to the Green Revolution and national development.
"You must not yield to anyone. You carry the legacy of the Congress party and the spirit of patriotism. You are responsible for the Green Revolution, ensuring food security for the nation and establishing domestic industry," he emphasized.
This rally in Bhopal is the kickoff of a series of Kisan Sammelans organized by Congress to protest the interim India-U.S. trade framework. Leaders from Congress argue that the agreement threatens farmers by inundating Indian markets with cheaper U.S. imports, jeopardizing essential crops like cotton, soybean, and maize, thus undermining food security and rural livelihoods. Similar events are scheduled across states, including Maharashtra, to galvanize farmer support nationwide.
