They were subsequently brought to Mohali Police on a production warrant from Patiala jail for an extortion case involving a Mohali-based property dealer from whom they had demanded ₹50 lakh in extortion money back in January.
According to DGP Yadav, following Maxi's disclosures, a police team led by DSP (Dera Bassi) Bikramjit Singh Brar was escorting him to recover a weapon, specifically a .32 calibre pistol, which he claimed to have hidden in a remote spot on the Zirakpur-Ambala Highway, with intentions to harm the property dealer.
Upon arrival at the site, Maxi opened fire at the police in a bid to escape. In the ensuing exchange of fire, he suffered a bullet wound to his left leg and has since been transported to Civil Hospital Mohali for medical attention.
