Did Gaurav Gogoi's Visit to the Pakistan Embassy Spark National Security Concerns?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 8 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, intensified his criticism of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday, asserting that Gogoi's previous visit to the Pakistan Embassy in New Delhi has raised significant political and national security alarms, necessitating a wider investigation.
In a statement to reporters, CM Sarma mentioned that the controversy emerged after a photo circulated on social media featuring Gogoi with a group of young individuals at the Pakistan Embassy.
According to the Chief Minister, Abdul Basit, who was the High Commissioner of Pakistan to India at that time, was also present during the interaction that occurred in 2015.
CM Sarma emphasized that such an interaction cannot be dismissed as a routine occurrence due to the “sensitive and adversarial” relationship between India and Pakistan.
Highlighting the Kargil War, the Chief Minister recalled the ultimate sacrifice made by Captain Jintu Gogoi from Assam, who devoted his life to the country, alongside many other brave soldiers.
“The entire nation is aware of the nature of India-Pakistan relations. During Operation Sindoor, the whole country rallied behind the Prime Minister, reflecting national sentiment,” CM Sarma remarked, stressing the emotional and political implications surrounding any engagement with Pakistan’s official entities.
The Chief Minister further alleged that no other senior Congress leader had ever visited Pakistan or engaged with its diplomatic mission in such a manner while leading a delegation. He admitted that he initially thought the circulating photograph was edited.
“For a long period, I believed the photo was altered. However, after a few days, Congress leaders themselves started acknowledging its authenticity, leading me to realize the photograph was legitimate,” the Chief Minister stated.
Once the photograph's authenticity was confirmed, he asserted, the situation could no longer be viewed in isolation.
He indicated that this prompted the authorities to broaden the investigation's scope. “Once it became evident that the photograph was genuine, we decided to expand the inquiry,” CM Sarma added, noting that the issue had implications that extend beyond ordinary political interactions.
He reiterated that the state government has a responsibility to thoroughly investigate all aspects of the situation, especially when national interests and public representatives are at stake.
