Ashok Gehlot Affirms Congress's Longstanding Support for Women's Reservation
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jaipur, April 16 (NationPress) Ashok Gehlot, a prominent Congress figure and former Chief Minister of Rajasthan, emphasized on Thursday that the Congress party has consistently championed women’s reservation. He noted that this commitment traces back to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who was instrumental in integrating women into grassroots governance.
Gehlot acknowledged that over the last 25 to 30 years, Rajiv Gandhi and the Congress party have been pivotal in elevating numerous women into political roles through the implementation of reservation in Panchayati Raj institutions and local governance.
“Rajiv Gandhi envisioned empowering women politically, which fundamentally transformed rural governance nationwide,” he stated.
While criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gehlot suggested that recognizing Rajiv Gandhi’s contributions and the initiatives taken during the UPA administration could have cultivated a more positive environment in Parliament.
“Had the Prime Minister acknowledged these efforts, it might have enhanced cooperation between the ruling party and the Opposition. Instead, he misrepresented the situation by claiming that Congress and other opposition parties oppose women’s reservation, which is simply untrue,” he remarked.
Gehlot underscored the widespread agreement among political factions regarding support for women’s reservation.
“No political entity is against women’s reservation. However, there are apprehensions regarding the potential for delimitation to be implemented under its guise. It is vital to determine if all states, including those in the south, and essential stakeholders were consulted regarding this significant matter,” he asserted.
He further probed whether the Prime Minister had consulted with the Opposition Leader in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, to forge a consensus on this issue.
“This was a prime opportunity to unify all parties around a historic reform, yet it was not leveraged constructively,” he commented.
Referring to the Congress’s record in women’s empowerment, Gehlot highlighted that the party facilitated the rise of India’s first female Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, and the first woman President, Pratibha Patil. He also pointed out Meira Kumar’s tenure as Lok Sabha Speaker.
“In contrast, the BJP has yet to appoint a woman as its national president,” he concluded.
