Kolkata, June 5 (NationPress) West Bengal's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that GlobalFoundries, one of the top semiconductor firms globally, is launching a fab-less centre for design and testing at the Kolkata Power Centre.
During a meeting on Wednesday with Kathy Giles-Diaz, the Consul General of the US in Kolkata, the Chief Minister emphasized their mutual goal of enhancing US-India relations and discussed potential partnerships in technology, innovation, and education.
According to CM Banerjee, the new facility will be located in the IT hub of Salt Lake.
"We have already allocated 13,000 square feet of space in the Software Technology Parks of India IT Park in Sector-5, and an additional 19,000 square feet space is in the pipeline," she stated.
Furthermore, the West Bengal government is collaborating with GlobalFoundries, start-ups, educational institutions, and industry leaders to establish a comprehensive power electronics ecosystem in the region.
"An internship program with universities is on the horizon, aimed at supporting students and cultivating future talent," the statement added.
CM Banerjee also mentioned that Santech Global Inc., a high-tech firm based in New Jersey focusing on semiconductors and nano-electronics, is interested in launching a major project in Kolkata.
Negotiations are currently in progress to provide the necessary support.
"We are finalizing the Global Capability Centre Policy for West Bengal to strengthen our state's position as a hub for next-generation technology and innovation," the CM noted.
