Mumbai, Nov 16 (NationPress) Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal urged the Indian plastics sector to strive for a twofold increase in exports, prioritize sustainability, and comply with global standards. In his speech at an industry gathering, the minister highlighted the importance of enhancing the sector's growth and global competitiveness by promoting India as a producer of high-quality and cost-effective products.

During the event, the minister awarded the Plexconcil Export Excellence Awards 2023-25 to notable achievers from the Indian plastics industry.
India's plastic exports totaled $12.5 billion in the fiscal year 2024-25, reflecting an 8 percent increase compared to $11.5 billion from the previous year.
Major exports include plastic raw materials, packaging items, and films, with notable growth in categories like plastic films and sheets and packaging materials.
The United States, China, United Arab Emirates, and Germany are key export markets, and the industry is geared towards enhancing its global market share and refining supply chain efficiency.
The government is committed to enhancing exports and competitiveness through improvements in quality and supply chain management.
Trade agreements with nations such as the US, UK, and EU are anticipated to propel further growth. The industry is also eyeing emerging markets in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
The plastics industry stretches across the nation, boasting over 2,500 exporters and providing employment to more than 4 million individuals. It comprises 30,000 processing units, with a significant portion (85-90 percent) belonging to small and medium enterprises.
India produces a variety of products, including plastics, linoleum, household goods, cordage, fishnets, floor coverings, medical supplies, packaging items, plastic films, pipes, and raw materials. The country primarily exports plastic raw materials, films, sheets, woven sacks, fabrics, and tarpaulins. The Government of India aims to elevate the plastics industry to $126 billion in the next five years.
The Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals has approved ten Plastic Parks across the country. Six of these parks have received final approval from various states, including Madhya Pradesh (two parks) and one each from Assam, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and Jharkhand. These parks are designed to create jobs and achieve environmentally sustainable growth.
