Census 2027: Gujarat Governor completes digital self-enumeration, urges citizens by May 31
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat on Monday, 18 May completed the online self-enumeration process for Census 2027 at Lok Bhavan in Gandhinagar, becoming one of the first constitutional authorities in the country to participate in what officials describe as India's first fully digital census self-enumeration system. He appealed to all citizens to complete the exercise before the 31 May deadline.
How the Digital Census Works
Census 2027 introduces, for the first time in India's history, a self-enumeration mechanism that allows citizens to submit their demographic details through an official web portal and a dedicated mobile application — from any location, without requiring a census worker to visit their home. Director of Census Operations in Gujarat, Sujal Mayatra, met the Governor during the event and briefed him on the platform's technical architecture and security features.
What the Governor Said
Addressing the initiative, Governor Devvrat said the country was 'rapidly moving towards a digital revolution under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.' He described the digital process as 'extremely simple, secure and convenient' for citizens and stressed that accurate, timely data was essential for building a 'strong and inclusive Viksit Bharat.' The Governor added that active public participation alone would make the nationwide campaign successful.
Gujarat's Rollout Timeline
The online self-enumeration window in Gujarat remains open on the official portal until 31 May. Following the digital phase, house-listing operations will be conducted across the state from 1 June to 30 June by more than one lakh census workers, officials said. The Governor conveyed his best wishes to the Census Department and its staff for the implementation of the exercise.
Political Participation
Minister of State for Education Rivaba Jadeja also joined the campaign on the same day, submitting her family's details on the online portal from Gandhinagar. She urged citizens to participate enthusiastically before the deadline and complete the process from home. 'Public participation in the initiative would contribute towards planning for the country's development and support the building of a stronger India,' she said.
With Gujarat serving as an early showcase for the digital census model, the state's participation rate over the coming weeks will be closely watched as a benchmark for the national rollout.
