Ahmedabad, Feb 28 (NationPress) In a pivotal move towards justice for survivors of sexual offenses, Gujarat's judiciary sent a strong signal on February 25 by imposing life sentences on seven rapists in a single day, under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Harsh Sanghavi, the Minister of State for Home in the state, applauded this decision as a significant achievement, reiterating the government's steadfast commitment to combating serious crimes such as rape.
In an interview with IANS on Friday, Harsh Sanghavi stated, "The Gujarat government has initiated an unwavering campaign against severe offenses including rape. We are resolute in our aim to guarantee justice for every girl and woman in the state. On this historic occasion, seven families in Gujarat experienced the victory of justice as seven rapists received life sentences, underscoring our firm dedication to the POCSO Act."
He acknowledged the police forces in Amreli, Vadodara, and Rajkot for their rapid and thorough investigations that ensured these offenders were held accountable.
Sanghavi further recognized the advancements made under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel's guidance, celebrating the fact that over 500 women have achieved justice through life sentences for rapists in the state. "In recent years, we have successfully sentenced over 574 rapists to life imprisonment, with 11 facing capital punishment. On February 25, we witnessed landmark rulings across Amreli, Vadodara, and Rajkot, where seven rapists were sentenced to life, delivering justice to seven victims," Sanghavi remarked.

In Amreli, charges were filed just 17 days post-arrest of the suspects. In a particularly harrowing case in Rajkot, involving both rape and murder, the police finalized the charge sheet within 40 days. The prompt response of Rajkot's rural police was also commended, with arrests and charges filed within days of the crimes.
