Gandhinagar, Jan 28 (NationPress) The Gujarat government has announced a halt on elections for the management committees of certain cooperative societies for a duration of six months, attributing this to the ongoing essential work tied to Special Intensive Revision (SIR) throughout the state and nationwide.

This decision was reached during a Cabinet meeting held in Gandhinagar on Wednesday.

In a statement to the media, Spokesperson Minister Jitu Vaghani explained that the scale and urgency of the SIR-related tasks have created challenges for the state revenue machinery, making it difficult to hold elections for specific categories of cooperative societies within the designated timeframe.

“Given the current circumstances, it has become practically impossible to carry out elections for the management committees of specified cooperative societies,” he commented.

He elaborated that this suspension is enacted under the authority granted by Section 161 of the Gujarat Cooperative Societies Act, 1961.

According to this provision, all specified cooperative societies listed under Section 74(g) of the Act, which are either in the process of elections or are due for them, have been granted relief from the stipulations of Sections 74(g) and 145(a) to (e) for a period of six months from the notification date.

Consequently, elections for the management committees of these societies will not be conducted during this timeframe.

However, the minister clarified that cooperative societies whose election processes are ongoing or are mandated by judicial orders will not fall under this exemption.

“Societies currently conducting elections or those required to do so due to court orders are excluded from this notification,” Vaghani stated.

The spokesperson minister also provided insights about Gujarat’s involvement in the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2026 held in Davos.

He noted that a high-level state delegation participated in the global event under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi.

Vaghani reported that over 58 meetings took place with prominent chairpersons, CEOs, investors, and representatives from multilateral institutions during the five-day event.

“Gujarat has further solidified its position as one of India’s most trustworthy and progressive states for investment across diverse sectors,” he remarked.

He also mentioned that the state’s policy stability and long-term planning were emphasized during these interactions, alongside Gujarat’s robust industrial base, infrastructure advancements, and innovation-focused growth strategy.

According to the minister, there was significant interest in the state’s governance model and its business-friendly environment.

Moreover, the minister stated that Gujarat’s infrastructure development initiatives extend beyond industrial needs.

“In addition to industrial expansion, the state government is working diligently to establish world-class infrastructure in the sports sector,” he mentioned, noting that this aspect also attracted attention during discussions at the forum.

The cabinet, he highlighted, extended congratulations to the deputy chief minister and the entire delegation for their engagement in WEF 2026.

Point of View

I believe that while this decision is necessary due to the ongoing SIR exercise, it raises questions about the democratic processes within cooperative societies in Gujarat. The suspension could ensure better administrative efficiency but also highlights the need for timely elections to maintain accountability.
