Gandhinagar, March 13 (NationPress) Over 275,000 water conservation initiatives have been executed throughout Gujarat as part of the first and second phases of the 'Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari' initiative, announced Water Supply Minister Ishwarsinh Patel during a session of the state Legislative Assembly on Friday.
In response to a query from a legislator, Patel highlighted that this substantial number of initiatives showcases the state's commitment to tackling irregular rainfall and increasing water demand through organized water conservation strategies.
Patel noted that Gujarat currently holds the sixth position nationally regarding the volume of water conservation projects completed under this initiative launched by the Indian government.
He revealed that 133,522 water conservation projects were finalized in the initial phase of the campaign statewide.
The second phase is actively in progress, with an additional 141,821 projects initiated thus far, bringing the total to over 275,000 projects.
Patel emphasized that this initiative is designed to enhance groundwater levels through organized rainwater collection and recharge.
"The program is being executed with the collaboration of diverse stakeholders, including government entities, local self-governments, gram panchayats, agricultural groups, NGOs, and community members who are contributing their voluntary labor," he stated.
He explained that various types of projects are being conducted under this initiative through inter-departmental coordination among sectors such as water supply, rural development, and panchayat institutions.
These projects encompass borewell recharge structures, the construction of check dams, rooftop rainwater harvesting systems, and deepening of ponds and other water bodies.
A total of 17 distinct categories of water conservation activities are being executed under this program.
The minister also shared with the Assembly that Gujarat has achieved representation among the top-performing urban local bodies involved in this initiative.
Notably, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation secured the third position among the top 10 municipal corporations nationwide, while Surat Municipal Corporation claimed the fourth spot, and Jamnagar Municipal Corporation ranked seventh.
